À travers une enquête biographique qui traverse l’Europe, les Amériques et les empires coloniaux, Curran suit les trajectoires intellectuelles et personnelles de penseurs, souverains et savants — de Louis XIV à Thomas Jefferson — pour montrer comment, au siècle des Lumières, une nouvelle manière de classer l’humanité s’est imposée. Il s’entretiendra à cette occasion avec Ourida Moustefai, professeure de français et spécialiste des Lumières françaises à Brown University.

Andrew Curran, écrivain et titulaire de la chaire William Armstrong en sciences humaines à Wesleyan, est l’auteur ou l’éditeur de six ouvrages, dont la biographie primée Diderot et l’art de penser librement. Il a également collaboré au New York Times, au Wall Street Journal, au New York Review of Books, à Time, à Newsweek et à la Paris Review.

 

Au cours de ce webinaire interactif, Andrew Curran lira un court extrait de son livre, avant de discuter avec Ourida Moustefai de l’héritage des Lumières, du rôle de la France coloniale, et de la manière dont le concept de race a pris un sens nouveau au XVIIIᵉ siècle.

On Tuesday, February 24, Andrew Curran will address the ASFAP about his new book, Biography of a Dangerous Idea: A New History of Race from Louis XIV to Thomas Jefferson. Through a biographical investigation that spans Europe, the Americas, and colonial empires, Curran traces the intellectual and personal journeys of thinkers, rulers, and scholars—from Louis XIV to Thomas Jefferson—to show how, during the Enlightenment, a new way of classifying humanity took hold. On this occasion, he will converse with Ourida Moustefai, professor of French and specialist in French Enlightenment at Brown University.

Andrew Curran, writer and William Armstrong Professor in the Humanities at Wesleyan, is the author or editor of six books, including the award-winning biography Diderot et l'art de penser librement. He has also contributed to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Review of Books, Time, Newsweek, and the Paris Review.

During this interactive webinar, Andrew Curran will read a short excerpt from his book, before discussing with Ourida Moustefai the legacy of the Enlightenment, the role of colonial France, and how the concept of race took on new meaning in the eighteenth century.
